The journey from Leh to Nubra Valley is about 125 km and takes 5–6 hours, but it’s much more than just a drive. As we ascend toward Khardung La, the scenery shifts dramatically—from rugged brown cliffs to snow-covered Himalayan peaks.

Today’s drive is approximately 165 km and takes around 6 hours, but trust us—every turn offers a postcard-perfect view.

We begin by tracing our way back toward Khalsar, but instead of heading to Leh, we take a left at the Agyam Bridge toward the remote villages of Shyok and Durbuk.

🌄 This route is steep, adventurous, and less traveled, making it a favorite among thrill-seeking travelers and photographers. Expect sharp turns, river crossings, and dramatic cliffside views.

🧭 Durbuk to Tangtse – The Traditional Pangong Trail

After passing Durbuk, we continue toward Tangtse, following the traditional route to Pangong Lake. The altitude starts increasing again, so remember to sip water and breathe easy.

You’ll begin to sense the terrain changing—dry, rocky landscapes slowly give way to wide open valleys.

And then, suddenly, it appears—Pangong Tso, shimmering in shades of blue, turquoise, and even green, depending on the light. Sitting at 14,000 ft., this natural, brackish lake stretches across India and China, with only one-third of it lying within Indian territory.

After a peaceful sunrise at the magical Pangong Lake, we packed up for one of the most scenic drives in Ladakh—towards the serene and lesser-visited Tso Moriri Lake. This long journey (approx. 255 km / 7 hours) would take us through rugged terrain, peaceful villages, and high-altitude beauty that felt untouched by time. 🚙🌄

🚗 The Road Less Traveled: Pangong ➝ Chushul ➝ Karzok ➝ Tso Moriri

The route via Chushul is remote and raw, dotted with military posts and distant mountains. The views here are surreal—shifting colors of land and sky, wild yaks grazing, and almost no traffic at all.

We stopped briefly at Karzok Village, one of the highest settlements in the world, and a gateway to the Tso Moriri region.

Reaching Tso Moriri (altitude ~15,000 ft) just before sunset was unforgettable. This high-altitude lake, surrounded by snow-capped peaks and rolling hills, felt more spiritual than scenic. The silence, the wind, and the reflections on the water made it truly magical. Did you know? Tso Moriri is part of a protected wildlife reserve—home to migratory birds, marmots, and even snow leopards in the winter! 🦅❄️

Leaving behind Korzok Village, we entered the colorful geothermal area of Puga Valley, known for its hot springs and mineral deposits. The terrain looked like a scene from another planet—raw, untouched, and surreal.

Next up was Tso Kar Lake, a stunning salt lake surrounded by marshlands and wild horses. It’s quieter and less touristy than Pangong or Tso Moriri, and the birdwatching here was fantastic. 🐦 Travel Tip: Keep your camera handy—wildlife sightings around Tso Kar are common, and the landscape is unlike anywhere else in Ladakh.

Soon after, we began our climb to Taglang La, the second-highest motorable road in the world. The ascent was steep, but the views from the top? Absolutely unforgettable. I felt like I was standing on the roof of the world!
