🏞️ Ladakh Itinerary – Day 5: Nubra to Turtuk & Thang (Zero Point)

Today’s journey takes you beyond the usual tourist path—to Turtuk, one of India’s northernmost villages, and Thang, the last accessible civilian point before the Pakistan border. Nestled along the Shyok River, these villages offer a blend of rich Balti culture, untouched landscapes, and eye-opening historical significance.

🌄 Morning – Nubra to Turtuk

We begin the drive after breakfast, passing through lush green valleys, rocky gorges, and apricot-laden orchards. The landscape transitions dramatically from Nubra's sand dunes to Turtuk’s alpine charm. Once part of Pakistan until 1971, Turtuk is now a peaceful Balti Muslim village where people speak Balti, Urdu, and Ladakhi, and still live in stone houses built in traditional styles.

Travel Tip: This is a restricted border area, so carry your photo ID and Inner Line Permit (ILP). Roads can be narrow—drive time is approx. 3.5 hours one way.

🕌 Midday – Explore Turtuk’s Culture & History

On arrival, visit the Balti Heritage House & Museum, a beautifully preserved home with traditional tools, clothes, and vintage photographs. A short walk leads to the Turtuk Waterfall, a serene natural spot perfect for a quick photo stop. Friendly locals often greet visitors with stories and smiles, making the experience even more memorable.

Cultural Note: Please dress modestly and ask permission before taking portraits.

🚩 Afternoon – Thang (Zero Point) Visit

A short drive takes us to Thang Village, also known as Zero Point—the final Indian civilian outpost near the Line of Control (LOC). From here, you can view Indian and Pakistani bunkers, and see where the Shyok River flows into Pakistan. It’s a humbling, powerful reminder of the region’s geopolitical importance.

Note: Photography is restricted in some areas; follow guidance from local authorities.

🌅 Evening – Return to Nubra

We return to Nubra Valley in the evening. After check-in at your guesthouse or camp, unwind with a traditional Ladakhi dinner, perhaps paired with butter tea. Clear skies and a quiet atmosphere make it a perfect night for stargazing.

🧾 ILP (Inner Line Permit) required

🧥 Carry warm layers—mornings and evenings get cold

📶 No mobile network in Turtuk & Thang—notify loved ones

💬 A simple “Salaam” goes a long way with locals

🍫 Carry water, snacks, and a basic first aid kit in advance

🏔️ Ladakh Itinerary – Day 6: Nubra Valley to Pangong Lake via Shyok

Today’s adventure takes you through one of Ladakh’s most scenic and offbeat routes—from Nubra Valley to Pangong Lake via Shyok. This route is known for its dramatic mountain landscapes, remote valleys, and thrilling high-altitude roads.

🌄 Morning – Depart Nubra, Drive via Shyok Valley

After an early breakfast, begin the drive toward Pangong Lake. The road leads you back toward Khalsar, and then takes a left at Agyam Bridge into the beautiful yet rugged Shyok Valley.

Expect narrow curves, river crossings, and awe-inspiring views. Short halts can be made at Durbuk and Tangtse villages for refreshments and photo opportunities.

Note: This route is remote and weather-sensitive—avoid during heavy rain.

Start early (by 6:30–7:00 AM) to reach Pangong by afternoon.

🌊 Afternoon – Arrive at Pangong Lake (14,000 ft)

By early afternoon, the turquoise stretch of Pangong Tso comes into view—a surreal high-altitude lake shared between India and China. Enjoy the peaceful setting and visit the 3 Idiots shooting point, made famous by the film.

Wildlife sightings may include Himalayan marmots, Brahminy ducks, and if you’re lucky, a red fox.

🍽️ Late Afternoon – Local Flavors & Leisure

Enjoy a hot meal at a lake-side café—momos, thukpa, Maggi, or Ladakhi tea pair beautifully with the cold air and panoramic views.

Take time to relax by the lake, photograph the reflections, or simply sit in silence as the sun starts to dip behind the mountains.

Sunset Tip: This is the golden hour—perfect for reflection shots and soft lighting.

🛏️ Evening – Overnight at Pangong

Check into a lake-facing camp or homestay (basic facilities, but unbeatable views). As night falls, watch the stars come out in one of the clearest skies you’ll ever see.

🏞️ Ladakh Itinerary – Day 7: Pangong Lake to Leh via Chang La Pass

I woke up early today, wrapped in layers, with one goal in mind—witness the sunrise at Pangong. As the first light kissed the lake, the waters shimmered in shades of gold, lavender, and icy blue. It was serene, magical, and one of the quietest yet most powerful travel moments I've ever had.

Today, we head back to Leh, retracing our steps over Chang La Pass, one of the highest motorable roads in the world. It’s a day to reflect, soak in the landscape, and begin wrapping up this unforgettable Himalayan adventure.

🌄 Early Morning – Sunrise at Pangong Lake

If there’s one thing not to miss at Pangong Lake, it’s the sunrise. The tranquility and changing colors of the lake at dawn are absolutely surreal.

📷 Carry your camera or phone fully charged—it’s breathtaking!

Pro Tip: Mornings are very cold (0–5°C). Wear thermals, gloves, and a beanie.

🍳 Breakfast with a View & Departure

After the sunrise, I warmed up with some Ladakhi butter tea and toast at the camp. Breakfast feels more special when you’re eating it with views of the Himalayas reflecting in the lake.

We packed up and began our drive back to Leh via Chang La, one of the most scenic routes in Ladakh.

🛣️ Route: Pangong → Tangtse → Durbuk → Chang La → Karu → Leh

🕗 Approximate drive time: 6–7 hours

🧊 Midday – Short Halt at Chang La Pass (17,586 ft)

One of the highlights of this route is the legendary Chang La Pass, the third-highest motorable pass in the world. It’s freezing, windy, and exhilarating all at once!

❄️ Snow-covered peaks and a small temple mark this stop

☕ Don’t miss the army-run tea stall—a cup of hot chai here is a blessing

🛑 Short breaks only—oxygen is thin at this altitude

Chang La Pass Travel Tips:

Avoid staying longer than 15–20 minutes

Carry camphor or oxygen spray if you feel dizzy

Take deep breaths and move slowly

🌆 Evening – Return to Leh & Free Time

By late afternoon, we reached Leh and checked into our hotel. It felt like coming home—only this time with a camera roll full of memories and a heart full of mountain air.

🛍️ Visit Leh Market for last-minute souvenirs (prayer flags, apricot oil, woollens)

🕌 Enjoy a peaceful stroll to Shanti Stupa if time allows

🍽️ Celebrate the trip with a relaxed dinner at a rooftop café

Packing Tip: If you're flying out tomorrow, organize your gear tonight—especially fragile souvenirs and ID documents.
